This morning it looks like DC will be canceling six of their New 52 titles at issue eight. None of the titles getting cut are surprising, although it might be surprising that they aren’t canning more than six. The books are:
- Static Shock
- Men of War
- Blackhawks
- Hawk and Dove
- Mister Terrific
- O.M.A.C.
As you may know, our pal Linc (@lincz2) was a reader of Static Shock for a while, but recently cut it from his subscriptions, which may curve his dissapointment. I do know that there is a lot of love for O.M.A.C. and, as I understand, it is supposed to be crossing over with Frankenstein. I’m not reading either of those right now, but it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
These books will be replaced by
- Batman Incorporated (written by Grant Morrison)
- Earth 2 (by James Robinson)
- World’s Finest (Paul Levitz)
- Dial H (China Miéville)
- G.I. Combat (J.T. Krul)
- The Ravagers (Howard Mackie)
The most interesting ones here to me are Earth 2 and World’s Finest, as they both focus on alternate universes and alternate versions of heroes. I thought the whole point behind the New 52 was to tighten the continuity and make things less confusing for new readers. Looks like they’ve abandoned that goal. I’d imagine these are happening to gear up for whatever the next big event is going to be.
I am most excited about Dial H. It is described on the DC blog as “a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.” If done right, we could get a more fleshed out origin to something like Irredeemable. I’m not familiar with Mr. Miéville’s work, but a cursory glance at his Wikipedia page tells me that he could really bring something special to that type of story. I think this title is a bold move for DC and I can’t wait for May.
